The collection contains twenty items, many pasted on a Liverpool & London Globe Insurance Co. ledger page, documenting the history of Shamokin, Pa. (all defaced by Hertzog with "Gift of Dr. Walter Sylvester Hertzog, Harvard 1905") including a letter from Patrick Langton to Mrs. Robin Nicely, 9 May 1842, concerning $50 owed by John to Henry Yoxtheimer, with a notice announcing a meeting of the stockholders of the Shamokin Town Lot Association, 26 July 1862, pasted on the verso; blank certificate for the Shamokin Town Lot Association; list of voters [Shamokin, Pa., 1854], with 63 names, on verso is the tally of votes for Governor and Canal Commissioners candidates; blank Teachers County Certificate, Common Schools of Pennsylvania, act of May 8, 1854. Also, printed invitation form filled in for the next meeting of the Pennsylvania General Assembly at Danville, Montour Co., on Tues., 10 April 1855; blank printed form, State of Pennsylvania Bounty Bond, Coal Township, Northumberland County, Pa.; printed notice for a public sale of a frame house and two lots on the Newtown school property, 1869; printed notice that Dr. C.W. Weaver moved his office in Shamokin, 1868; one share stock certificate in Northumberland County Agricultural Society issued to O.M. Fowler, 23 Feb. 1872; printed broadside advertising a lecture on the early history of Shamokin at the Academy of Music, Tues., May 18 [1875]; printed broadside, Still Alive! advertising the confectioner and baker C.C. Thomas, Shamokin, 1877; assessed valuations, 1904, Shamokin, Pa., second ward, blocks 176, 177, 180, 181, and 184, listing owners' names; newspaper clipping, "Pennsylvania Dutch; A Dunker Love Feast," undated. Also, Teachers' Monthly Report, Academy School, 1870, listing the names of pupils, their ages, subjects, and attendance, on the verso are three documents: a printed coal statement for 1881 of shipments from Northumberland County, a printed line drawing of a building at the corner of Commerce and Shamokin Streets, ca. 1866, and a printed form letter, Harrisburg, Feb. 1, 1876, enclosing a petition [not extant] to the Legislature asking them to pass a law to give every child a Common School education; a printed broadside for the public sale of house lots in Shamokin, 25 June 1859; Kimber Cleaver's application for 30 acres in Zerbe Township, Northumberland Co., witnessed by J.J. John, 30 June 1858, with a partial letter on St. Elmo Hotel, Philadelphia, stationery, to Dr. J.J. John, 24 Jan. 1872, asking for the coal lease for the Buck Ridge Colliery, on the verso is a bill of lading for a shipment of merchandise and furniture to John Watters, Catawissa, shipped by Atkins & Way on the canal boat Chief Justice, captained by Henry Croop; a printed Carrier's Address to the patrons of the "Herald," Shamokin, 1 Jan. 1868, printed signature of A.G. Auchmuty, on the verso are a blank form, Physician's Daily Report to the Sanitary Committee, 1872, and an income tax receipt from Shamokin to Internal Revenue for $11.40 taxes on income of $228 in 1866, 25 July 1867. Also, two copies of Walter Sylvester Hertzog's printed 4-page curriculum vitae; and Glendale Masonic Bodies Bulletin, vol. 5, no. 7, March 1928, issue containing a biography of Hertzog.

The Sutro Tunnel Company sold stocks to fund the construction of the Sutro Tunnel, which ran from Virginia City to Dayton, Nevada. The tunnel was designed to allow drainage away from mining operations in the Comstock Lode, and was first suggested by Adolph Sutro (1830-1898) in 1860.
